Beyond the Scoreboard - Youth Employment Opportunities and Skills Development in the Sports Sector

The International Labour Office, Geneva, Switzerland, has published a comprehensive book that examines how youth leadership and skills development can be fostered through sports. It focuses on sports’ vital role in the social development and employability of young people. The authors consider what sport means for social and economic development and how it can be an innovative method of drawing attention to issues such as HIV/AIDS prevention and the reduction of violence and poverty. The need for ethically grounded sports management and physical education in schools is also highlighted. The many challenges confronting the sector are examined as well, such as women’s empowerment in sport, the social insertion of athletes with a disability, and the ensuring of a safe environment.
The book identifies what opportunities are available for employment at the local, regional, and global levels. Case studies and examples from Asia, Africa, Latin America, Europe and the United States are presented, revealing how the sports sector often acts as a link between local and global markets. The ILO’s Youth Sport Program methodology is also explained to illustrate how sport can develop soft and core employability skills. This is a concrete step towards officially recognizing the importance of sports values and skills, and how they may benefit youth in a global labor environment.
The book is edited by Giovanni di Cola, coordinator of the Universitas program at the International Labor Office. He represents the ILO on the UN Task Force and the UN Communication Group on Sport and Development, is a visiting professor at the University of Teramo, Italy, and a member of the scientific committee of the Rivista di Diritto ed Economia dello Sport.
