Vietnam football betting organisers sent to jail

A Vietnam court has jailed three people for up to four years each for illegally gambling on European football matches and handed suspended prison terms to five more, a court official told News24. Nguyen Tien Dung, the 39-year-old organiser of the betting syndicate, was sentenced to four years in jail, while two other gamblers were handed terms of two and three years by the Hanoi People's Court. The court also handed down suspended sentences of between two and three years to five other gang members.

The gambling ring was busted in May 2006, after reportedly having taken bets worth nearly US$20 000 from November 2005 on 30 matches in the English Premier League and the European Champions League.
