Cannavaro was also a central figure in making a success of the SOS Children’s Villages charity’s record-breaking joint World Cup campaign with FIFA.
As part of the FIFA awards night’s festivities, ‘6 villages for 2006’, the official charity campaign of the 2006 World Cup, was showcased, highlighting how the € 25 million raised will be supporting orphaned and abandoned children around the world. The campaign will provide over 800 children with a new family home in six new SOS Children’s Villages in Vietnam, Brazil, Mexico, Nigeria, South Africa and Ukraine.
Former Swiss international Stephane Chapuisat is the latest to commit to SOS Children's Villages by becoming a FIFA/SOS ambassador at a New Year's cocktail reception hosted by FIFA President Seth Blatter last week. Other players include Kubilay Türkyilmaz, Andriy Shevchenko, Wayne Rooney, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Dunga.
