AFC expects imminent FIFA decision on Iran

The Asian Football Confederation Legal Committee has discussed probable FIFA sanctions against Iran. AFC President Mohamed Bin Hammam told the committee's last meeting for 2006 to expect a decision from FIFA concerning the Iranian Football Federation. "We are of course waiting for the official notice from FIFA and will be able to comment only after we get it," he said, as quoted by Persian League. The AFC chief stressed that the situation could be resolved if Iran reacted positively to the suggestions FIFA is expected to provide. “The door will be open to them to rectify the current situation.”

The committee also proposed an amendment to the principle of geographical rotation which governs the hosting of the AFC Asian Cup and AFC Challenge Cup and decided to assess the membership application of the Northern Mariana Islands based on key Vision Asia aspects like league competition, clubs, youth and women’s football.
