ESPN gets rights to classic UEFA matches

TV broadcaster ESPN has secured global rights from UEFA to 60 vintage club soccer finals dating from 1956. A five-year agreement covers ESPN networks in the Asia, Australia, US, Africa, the Middle East and Europe. Included in the lineup are the UEFA European Champion Clubs' Cup finals, UEFA Cup finals and UEFA European Cup Winners' Cup. ESPN televises the UEFA Champions' League and has built up a strong following among its core male 18- to 50-year-old audience. Tony Stimpson, director of programming at ESPN Classic Sport, describes his acquisitions as "unforgettable encounters from a golden age of European club soccer," Variety reported.
